Immemorial Waters, 2nd BIOM Residency Showcase at Gallery Espace Project Space

We are pleased to announce the opening of Immemorial Waters, a showcase of the BIOM Residency 2nd Edition. The exhibition will run from 21st March till 4th April 2025, and is supported by Gallery Espace and Shared Ecologies.

The BIOM Residency Program at Maze Collective Studio, supported by Shared Ecologies, is a hybrid mentorship initiative dedicated to environmentally engaged photography practices. The residency provides darkroom facilities, expert guidance, and a public showcase to three artists, fostering critical discourse on ecological themes through photography and alternative processes. Immemorial Waters will display ongoing projects by the three residents, Shreni Sanghvi, Ufaq Fatima and Niharika Chauhan.

Details on the Residency Projects

’Vanishing Acts’ by Shreni Sanghvi is an exploration of impermanence, through the symbiotic relationship between the shifting lives and landscapes of Phey, a village nestled along Ladakh’s Indus River. It underscores the resilience of nature and communities in the face of change, highlighting the continuous flow of life akin to the river that sustains it.

In ‘Slipping through the hands’, Ufaq Fatima documents the lives sustained by the Wular Lake in Kashmir. As the lake continues to deplete, the fisher community of Kashmir, already trapped in generational poverty, faces an existential threat that they are struggling to overcome. The daily labor is grueling, the debt mounting, and the societal divides—fueled by stereotypes and class discrimination—only serve to deepen the challenges they face.

‘Time is a River’ by Niharika Chauhan is an intimate study of how time has shaped Shahpur, her village in Uttar Pradesh. This transformation becomes visceral through the slow decay of my ancestral home, the fragmented memories of those who once lived within its walls, and the shifting course of the Yamuna.
