Kandankali Samaram: Documentation & Education, by Blaise Joseph

‘Kandankali Samaram-Jila Satyagraha Samaram’ is an important people’s movement in the recent history of Kerala. It is a struggle that put a halt to a project which threatened the ecosystem of an ecologically-sensitive region. In 2017, a mega petroleum project was proposed in this region for a Dedicated Storage Terminal, The local community protested against the project because they believed that the development proposed on 129 acres would not only contaminate their water supply and level many hills, it would destroy the vegetation of the entire region—including paddy fields, mangroves and wetland; a disaster for the region’s ecosystem. The movement lasted 3 years, starting from the time the project was proposed in 2017, including via the formation of an action committee named ‘Kandankali Samaram-Jila Sathyagraha Samaram’.
One of the main forms of documentation and archiving through the supported project will be interviews, hand-drawn/painted murals and interactive educational materials and games that visualise the details of the Movement. The murals will be done in public places/on public walls in Payyanur town. After dialoguing with the local leaders appropriate walls will be chosen to paint these narrative stories.
