Tides, Thresholds & Traces: A Film Curation by Shared Ecologies

How do we observe our relationship to ecology, which is under constant transformation and oftentimes inconceivable to the eye? We eventually see dying trees, scorched soil, migrating birds, loss of habitat and so on. But what are our points of entry, and how can micro and macro views, history and mythology lend us ecological sight?
This screening hopes to open up space to sense, feel, and think with the more-than-human.
‘Requiem of a Mangrove Forest’ is a short documentary film explores the unheard voices of two mangrove forests that have been dying for almost four years and eventually died due to continuous ignorance of human activities in Goa. Their death impacted not just humans but also the environment during the time of rising temperatures and sea levels. Aerial and underwater photography provides a unique perspective on the colossal impact that humans have on fragile freshwater ecosystem.
‘The Mushroom Keepers,’ a Fungi Foundation India production directed by Naveed Mulki, unveils the profound relationships between fungi and the Khasi and Garo communities of Meghalaya, India. This documentary short film explores how fungi shape spiritual and cultural worldviews. Through intimate conversations with the elders of these communities, it reveals the intertwined loss of biodiversity and ancestral knowledge as old-growth forests dwindle.
‘Altodi Poltodi’ is a mixed media video work that considers the politics of the inside and outside, reflecting on liminal spaces. Rakhondars are spirit-protectors in Goa, who walks along the periphery of the village at night to keep its inhabitants safe. In this video essay, the artist pair think about the drifting and transformation of wood, the origin myths of Goa, ecology and object-hood and designated places of worship.
